What "Sovereign" Means
A sovereign author retains full intellectual property ownership, controls their own distribution channels, prices their own work, and builds a direct relationship with their reader — not a relationship mediated by Amazon's algorithm or a traditional publisher's contract.
This is not a new concept — it's how every book was published before the consolidation of the publishing industry. We're simply putting the tools back in the author's hands.

What You Actually Need to Ship a Book
Manuscript + Editing
You need your work in clean, final form. Hire a developmental editor if you need structural feedback. Hire a copy editor for line-level polish. Do not skip this.

Interior Layout (Print)
The typeset layout for print is different from your manuscript. Use Affinity Publisher, Adobe InDesign, or Atticus. Export to PDF/X-1a for print-on-demand submission.
KDP (Amazon), IngramSpark, and BookBaby all accept PDF/X-1a.
Cover Design
Your cover is your primary marketing asset. Commission a professional. Use Reedsy, 99designs, or find designers on Dribbble. Provide the spine width calculation from your printer.
For IngramSpark: use their spine width calculator with your trim size and page count.
ISBN + Copyright
Purchase ISBNs from Bowker (myidentifiers.com) for both the print and ebook editions. Register copyright with the US Copyright Office ($65 per title). You own it.
Never use a "free ISBN" from KDP or another distributor — it names them as publisher, not you.
Print-on-Demand Distribution
IngramSpark gives you access to 40,000+ bookstores and libraries globally. KDP gives you Amazon presence. Use both. Expanded Distribution through IngramSpark covers Barnes & Noble, indie bookshops, and more.
Set a realistic wholesale discount (55%+ for IngramSpark) if you want bookstores to actually carry it.
Your Own Website + Direct Sales
This is the margin multiplier. Selling direct through your own site removes the retailer cut. Use Stripe for payments, ship yourself or use a fulfillment service. This is how you build a reader relationship.
We built electricastrology.com on Next.js + Firebase. You can use Shopify, Squarespace, or any platform you can sell through.
Digital Edition (EPUB)
Use Calibre or Vellum to generate a clean EPUB from your manuscript. Sell the EPUB directly on your site, and distribute to libraries through OverDrive or Libro.fm for broader reach.
The EA platform serves the EPUB as a member benefit — the book drives subscriptions to the app.
